GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport High School students are learning about local history while doing a bit of detective work.

More than 800 graves are located in Mississippi City Cemetery, which dates back to the early 1840s. History and GIS students at Gulfport High are working with the Gulfport Historical Society to document the grave sites and create a modern map of the cemetery.

Students are plotting the map work carefully by hand with string lines and tape measures. The tree canopy prevents the use of modern GPS devices.

Students have nearly completed the map, making work on the first section of cemetery. Future classes will carry the project forward.

Steve Phillips will have more tonight on WLOX News Now.
