PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) - A dream that has been more than three years in the making is coming true today in Pascagoula. Contracts were signed by The Mississippi Maritime Museum Foundation and Fletcher Construction.
What that means is renovation will soon begin on two old Pascagoula High School buildings that have sat vacant for years.
The foundation has been working the last several months to make the Mississippi Maritime Museum a reality.
The renovation will be done in stages. First up, a $500,000 renovation of a 7,000-square-foot building that will house the maritime activity center. That should be up and running by the end of this year.
Later, renovations will also begin on a 17,000-square-foot adjacent building that will house the actual museum. Money for that part of the project is still being raised.
Museum directors say this is a banner day for the city. They hope once the museum is open, it will become a major tourism draw for the City of Pascagoula.
