GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Expansion plans are moving forward at the Gulfport Sportsplex. The Gulfport City Council gave the go-ahead Tuesday for the first phase of expansion to begin soon.
The $8.2 million project will include construction of eight new ball fields along with two multipurpose fields for either soccer or football. Gulfport Leisure Services Interim Director George Manemann said phase one of the project is all about getting the land ready for the fields, concession stands and restrooms to be built.
"They have 120 days right now for this initial piece to get the dirt done, get the landscaping, get the land scrapped and grubbed so that the next phase of the project can take place," said Manemann. "That's when the facilities will get built, when the fences are laid out and the fields are built."
This is the first major expansion planned for the Gulfport Sportsplex. It's all designed to attract more tournaments.
The expansion is scheduled to be completed by the fall of next year.
