HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - One day after a fatal accident on I-10, investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong. Three people were killed in the accident involving two 18-wheelers late Monday night in Hancock County.
Kathy Johnson travels on Interstate 10 pretty often. She's seen a lot of accidents. However the one from Monday night surprised her.
"There's been several times where there have been multiple cars with fatalities and typically you'll see a semi truck or two or even a motorcycle and people just need to slow down," said Johnson.
Monday night's accident included a Mitsubishi, a trailblazer, and two 18 wheelers. Some believe that construction along the interstate could be the blame.
"If construction was going on at that time, maybe greater precautions could have been there to prevent that by slowing down traffic at a further distance out, as people get closer to construction," said driver Kenneth Rosier.
Highway officials confirm that one lane of traffic was closed off Monday night. However it's still unclear whether that was the case during the accident.
Johnson believes the narrowness of the lanes could also be a factor. "Man, these are some narrow lanes and I've got a little car, but when it's night with lights and it's narrow, I can easily see how an accident will happen," said Johnson.
Re-creation teams will continue to look into the cause of the accident.
