BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - About 25 potential charter boat vendors are attending a workshop at the Department of Marine Resources. The DMR and Secretary of State are moving forward with a plan to provide public ferry services to and from the Deer Island.
The boat owners are learning more about the history of the island, the environmental challenges and the process of becoming a licensed vendor.
A new pier has been built on the north side of the island to serve the ferry boat vendors.
Some of the potential vendors are charter boat fishermen. Others are retirees looking for a way to use their boats to make some money.
"We hope to establish low-impact tourism to the island, consistent with maintaining the pristine nature of the environment," said Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.
