BILOXI, MS (Biloxi Shuckers) - Game one of the double-header was a seven inning affair and both teams scored all their runs in the second inning.
Tennessee got to Shuckers starting pitcher Javi Salas in that inning. Kelly Dugan hit a high fly ball to the corner in left field. Kyle Wren made the catch, but on the sacrifice fly ball, Billy McKinney raced home from third base to give the Smokies the lead.
Carlos Penalver came through for Tennessee with a triple to center field, Brett Phillips stretched out, but couldn't make the catch. David Freitas galloped to home plate and the Smokies led 2-0.
Bottom of the second the Shuckers would erupt for three runs. Garrett Cooper belted an RBI double to center field. On the hit Jacob Nottingham scored to cut the Smokies lead 2-1.
Biloxi would load the bases against Tennessee starting pitcher Tyler Skulina. Kyle Wren stepped up to the plate and delivered a two-run double to left field. Cooper and Nick Shaw would gallop home and that would be the end of the scoring.
Stephen Peterson (W, 4-0) pitched one inning and posted the win. He gave up one hit and tossed two strikeouts.
Javier Salas pitched 4.2 innings. The Smokies got two hits and two earned runs on Salas who walked 5 batters and struck out 4.
Stephen Kohlscheen pitched a third of an inning and he didn't give up a hit. Ace closer Jaye Chapman (S, 10) pitched the top of the seventh inning. He gave up no hits and preserved the 3-2 win for the Shuckers.
Tennessee would pull out a 4-1 win in game two. Both teams were tied at 1 before the Smokies forcing extra-innings. In the top of the eight, Tennessee exploded for three runs.
Wei-Chung Wang pitched 6.2 inning for the Shuckers. Tennessee got three hits and 1 earned run off Wang who had 3 base on balls and two strikeouts.
Tristan Archer relieved Wang and he gave up 3 hits, 3 earned runs and two home runs. Mark Zagunis hit a solo blast in the top of the eighth inning and pinch hitter Kelly Dugan ripped a two run homer. Archer (l, 2-1) suffered the loss for Biloxi.
Jen-Ho Tseng started the game for the Smokes but was forced to leave after 2.1 innings after suffering an injury to his throwing arm. David Garner (w, 1-1) pitched two innings and got the win. The Shuckers got 2 runs off Garner. Cory Black (S, 2) pitched one inning and picked up the save for the Smokies.
The Shuckers (17-7) have an off-day on Tuesday and open a five-game road series at Pensacola beginning Wednesday.
