River Death Under Investigation

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) _ Jackson County search teams have recovered the body of a 20-year-old Pascagoula man from Little River. Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus said the body of Nathan Stewart was found Sunday afternoon, about 10 hours after he left a houseboat on a small craft to pick up items for breakfast. ``He used his girlfriend's Jet Ski to pick up a few groceries at the little store in the bend,'' Broadus said. ``He left before daylight. After a while, when he didn't come back, they knew something must be wrong.''

Sheriff's department search and rescue divers found Stewart's body at 4:10 p.m. Sunday in the water at the mouth of Little River where it meets the East Pascagoula River, said Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd. The sheriff's department and the coroner's office are still investigating Stewart's death, which authorities said appeared to be accidental.

Stewart was a construction worker and had been working on a new high-rise bridge over the Pascagoula River, Broadus said. (Copyright 2001 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
