BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - WLOX News Now has learned Bay St. Louis City Councilwoman Wendy McDonald has been airlifted to Ochsner Health Center in New Orleans, LA.

McDonald was hit by a vehicle outside of Our Lady of the Gulf Church, where she was attending a funeral visitation Monday morning. Witnesses tell us at least two other people were injured when the driver barreled into a crowd of pedestrians.

Councilman Lonnie Falgout said McDonald's family is asking for privacy, but he did say "it's serious."

Angela Eastin, with the Habitat for Humanity Bay Waveland Area, said McDonald was rushed to Gulfport Memorial Hospital after the wreck. McDonald is the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Bay Waveland Area.

Eastin said a CT scan revealed McDonald had a skull fracture and bleeding in her head.

McDonald underwent surgery in Gulfport to alleviate the internal bleeding before she was flown to New Orleans, according to Eastin. She said McDonald still needs surgery on her right eye and ear. She will also undergo plastic surgery.

McDonald and the others were attending the visitation and funeral for Jimmy Chiniche, a Bay St. Louis civil engineer.
