GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

People all across the coast are recovering after Thursday morning's scary weather. The dangerous conditions seemed to take everyone by surprise in north Gulfport.

The deluge started in the early morning hours. The lack of daylight didn't help drivers trying to navigate the roadways that had turned into rivers. One car ended up partially submerged in an overflowing ditch on the side of Oneal Rd. A passerby stopped and rushed to rescue the driver, pulling her through the car window.

Further south on Lavelle Dr., the Gulfport Fire Department also rescued a woman from her van submerged in water.

"We train every day for this type stuff. We did what we were supposed to do. We got her out. She's safe," said firefighter Jeffrey Flynn.

John Petipfils waded through the mess across Three Rivers Rd. to get medicine for his pregnant girlfriend.

"Water was all the way up to my waist, and so I had to walk it," said Petipfils.

Along the way, he told people driving to turn around.

"I was like you can't get through," said Petipfils.

Then, the rain slowed, giving Crystal Croft time to assess flooding in her home.

"This has never happened before, and it has rained a lot," said Croft.

She returned home after evacuating with many of her neighbors. She said the flooding caught everyone by surprise.

Further south off Three Rivers Rd., people in the Southern Oaks Mobile Home and RV Park were counting their blessings.

"The winds were unbelievable. The rain just kept coming. Hail. You hear everything in a camper, and it was just crazy and scary," said Dannette Chappell.

It was a scary situation that left many people shaken, but thankful to be alive.
