BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Bo Jackson is preparing to kick off his fifth Bo Bikes Bama bike ride on Saturday, April 30 in Auburn to raise money for the Governor's Emergency Relief Fund.

The fund helps to build storm shelters and help tornado survivors repair their home.

For the third straight year, the ride will begin and end at Auburn University where Jackson starred in football and baseball before doing the same in the NFL and Major Leagues.

But while Jackson will eclipse his $1 million goal, the rides have helped to lift the state's spirits in the wake of the storm.

Helen Brindley, whom Jackson stopped to chat with on his first ride through Cullman County, says she appreciates Jackson bringing attention to storm survivors like her.

Brindley, who was thrown from her home on April 27, 2011, said Jackson stopped to speak to her during the 2012 ride.

"I thought that was real sweet when I told him I was going to cry and he reached down and hugged me and said 'Don't do that because I'll cry, too,’" she said.

"It meant a lot more than I guess it does to most people that hasn't been through that. I'm going to cry again. I need Bo to come hug me," Brindley said.

"I remember her. I remember her story," Jackson said during an interview several weeks ago.

Jackson said he hopes the ride puts faces on storm survivors like Brindley.

"And by riding through those towns across the state and by stopping to talk to this lady and her family, it put a face on that victim," Jackson said.
