JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - You may have seen the work going on along Interstate 10 in Jackson County. Mississippi Department of Transportation crews are busy laying 40 miles of fiber optic cable along the shoulder of the busy highway.
It's an integral part of a $10 million Intelligent Transportation System project. The project will utilize around 100 high definition cameras, 10 large message boards, Bluetooth technology and radar sensors, all in an effort to improve traffic flow on that increasingly busy stretch of I-10 between Harrison County and the Alabama state line.
MDOT engineer Mike Harter said once in place, the system will be able to relay real time traffic warnings through message boards and AM radio broadcasts. Drivers will be alerted to travel times and warned about things like heavy fog on the bridge or smoke from a prescribed burn.
