BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Ocean Springs needed a win over Oak Grove to advance into the second round of the Class 6A baseball playoffs Monday night. The home standing Warriors would jump out to a 3-2 advantage after four innings.
In the top of the 5th inning the Greyhounds loaded the bases. Drew Windham belted a sacrifice fly ball to deep left field. Blake Sears galloped home for the game tying run.
Tate Pepper slapped a single into right field, the Warriors outfielder made a perfect throw to home plate where Brad Wall was tagged out to end the Greyhounds threat. That would turn out to be a back breaker for the Greyhounds.
Oak Grove would plate a walk off winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning to eliminate the Greyhounds 4-3 and out of the title chase. Ocean Springs closed out the 2016 season with 20 wins and 9 losses.
Biloxi (15-13) traveled to Pearl and the Pirates would out score the Indians 6-4. Pearl advances to face the George County Rebels Friday night in Lucedale in game one of the best-of-three second round playoff series.
The Stone County Tomcats dropped a heart breaker on the road at West Jones Monday night. West Jones prevailed 1-0 to eliminate the 14 and 11 Tomcats in the Class 5A ranks.
Defending Class 4A State Champion St. Stanislaus was back in the state playoffs and opened up with Forrest County AHS. The Aggies won game one 4-2 and the Rockachaws captured game two 2-1 to force a third and final deciding game Monday night in Bay st. Louis.
The Rockachaws (15-9) threatened in the bottom of the 3rd when Brendan Logan laid down a perfect bunt with a runner on first. Carter St. Mary took off and raced from first to third base.
Luke Bradley hit a high fly ball to center field. The catch was made for the second out in the inning, but on the sacrifice fly ball, St. Mary raced home to give the Rockachaws a 1-0 lead.
The Aggies would final get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. Cole Cameron slapped a single into right field. Brandon Kistler galloped to home plate to tie the game at 1.
It stayed that way until the top of the 7th inning. Forrest County AHS would hit back to back doubles off Nick Hertz who was pitching an excellent game. Austin McCray's doubled plated the Aggies go-ahead run and Forrest County AHS was three outs away from taking out the Rockachaws.
Aggies relief pitcher Brandon Kistler would pitch 4 scoreless innings and he struck out the side in the bottom of the 7th inning to secure the win. He was dynamic and he zeroed in on the strike zone to keep the Rockachaws off balance.
St. Stanislaus head coach Mark Logan did another excellent job this season in getting the Rockachaws back into the playoffs. He lost both starting pitchers from the Class 4A State Championship team and still got his team in the hunt.
St. Patrick advanced into the Class 3A playoff ranks with a decisive 7-1 victory over Franklin County Monday night in Biloxi. Head coach Eddie Burger has done a super job this season guiding his Fighting Irish to 15 wins and 6 losses.
Senior Jamie Luzenburg cracked his first home run of the season in the bottom of the 3rd to give the Fighting Irish the early lead.
Blaise Butirich had a big night at the plate and on the mound. Butirich had a couple of RBI with a single and a two-run blast in the bottom of the 5th inning for his 3rd home run on the season. Butirich also pitched six scoreless innings.
st. Patrick advances to face Southeast Lauderdale Friday night on the road in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.
Resurrection picked up win No. 8 on the season against 12 losses Monday night. The Eagles defeated Bogue Chitto on the road 10 to 6.
