BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - A new disagreement between the Bay St. Louis mayor and city council put the city leaders on opposite sides of the fence on yet another issue Monday night.
Mayor Les Fillingame told city council he would like to hold off on hiring a clerk as a cost-saving measure.
But that doesn't sit well with city council members, who believe the high turnover is a contributing factor to the city's financial woes.
"We're right in the middle of trying to re-group this city," said Councilman Lonnie Falgout. "We are all sitting here tonight because we want to regroup this city and make this thing stand up again. And to say we don't need a city clerk, that just doesn't make sense."
The mayor says the city's new comptroller is managing city finances, and he says the accounting firm the city is looking to hire should help keep things on the right track.
"I don't think we need to fill the position right now. Let's give ourselves a little time for the things we put in place to work and I think they are working and working well," said Fillingame.
The mayor told the council he would like to re-evaluate the situation after the accounting firm finishes its work for the city.
