GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It's a program with a simple name, fresh and clean, but it means the world to the less fortunate among us on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the Salvation Army headquarters in downtown Gulfport does laundry for the homeless. In addition, people can use the showers to clean themselves up for the next few days.

The fresh and clean program is staffed by a number of volunteers. Many said they do it because it's the Christian thing to do and they get more out of it than they give.

Meanwhile, clients of the Salvation Army say they don't know what they would do for clean clothing if it weren't for this program.

Fresh and clean needs your help as well. Extra volunteers to handle laundry duties are always needed.

Perhaps more than anything else though, supplies are needed. Items such as towels, washcloths, soap, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes are in short supply. In addition, dryer sheets, bleach and laundry detergent are also needed on a regular basis.

If you can donate any of these items, just go by the Salvation Army headquarters on 22nd St. in downtown Gulfport.
