GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Multiple wrecks on Hwy. 49 Friday afternoon sent two people to the hospital, and an eyewitness fearing for her children's safety.

The wrecks involved four cars, and tied up traffic for hours. Officials say they are still trying to piece the complex series of events together.

About 2:45 p.m., Gulfport Police responded to reports about a man lying on Hwy. 49. Eyewitness Marie Gill described what happened as a scene out of movie.

“A man jumped on top of a vehicle and she tried to get away,” Gill said. “She was driving with him on top of the vehicle.”

Police say the man then got into the Volkswagen as the driver exited, drove away on 49, then hit a Toyota at the intersection of Parkwood Dr., near Planet Fitness.

“I was afraid he was going to run me off,” Gill said. “I actually told the kids to get on the floor because I didn’t know if he had a gun or not.”

After the first wreck, officials say the man then drove north and hit a Nissan, which then crashed into a Cadillac at the intersection of Oneal Rd.

Gill got close enough to report the tag number to police.

“I followed him,” Gill said. “I wasn’t going to chase him with kids in the car.”

While trying to keep traffic flowing, police spent much of the afternoon trying to piece together the case.

The suspect and one of the other drivers are being treated for non-life threatening injuries. However, Gill says the scene was graphic.

“The most frightening thing was pulling up to it and seeing a lady’s head hanging out the window from the air bag," Gill added.

Police have not determined a motive. Although the suspect is not in custody, criminal charges are pending.
