GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

There was a flag retirement ceremony Wednesday in Gulfport.

The Daughters of the American Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution held the ceremonial program at Gulfport High School.

Members of the ROTC took turns, cutting each stripe of the flag to be burned separately as a history of the flag was read.

Both organizations also honored cadets from several high schools.

In addition, the DAR also presented the school with a new flag.

"It speaks to the respect we have for the flag of our country. And so, as we do these ceremonies and as we work with the young people, what it does is it helps the young people to understand the importance of doing things right," said Judith Breland of DAR.

The Daughters of the American Revolution does this ceremony every year at schools with ROTC programs.
