Coast city named by Smithsonian Magazine in 'Best Small Towns'

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - A national magazine has named one South Mississippi city a "gem on the Gulf."

Ocean Springs is spotlighted in a new article by Smithsonian Magazine. It was named one of the Best 20 Small Towns to Visit in 2016.

Citing the courage and resilience of residents after Hurricane Katrina, and Gulf Islands National Seashore, officials named the town with the likes of Hot Springs, Arkansas and Bar Harbor, Maine.

Local businesses say it's nice to get some good publicity.

"I'm really excited that they would highlight the good parts of ocean springs," says Bayou Belle owner Sandra Gagliano. "We have a wonderful art community, we have great festivals, we have several every year. We have local art museums, the Walter Anderson Museum and the Mary C who offer culinary classes, art classes, everything that anyone would want to come here and see."

Businesses hope the article will drive people to the city of discovery.
