BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs used the long ball in down Co-Lin. Hannah Melendez hit two home runs to help lead Gulf Coast to a 4-2 win in Game 1. She came right back with another home run in Game 2 as the Lady Bulldogs posted a 16-4 win in five innings.
Molly Murphy joined the long ball club with two home runs in game two, including a grand slam.
The Lady Bulldogs are 41-3 and concluded the MACJC regular season posting a 25-3 record.
It's the second consecutive season Gulf Coast has had a 40-plus win season.
Head coach Kenneth Long said, "When you look at that many wins against the opponents that we play, that says everything about this team. We're a solid team. We play together."
Gulf Coast opens the MACJC playoffs Friday hosting East Mississippi at 6 p.m. Game two is set for 2 p.m. Saturday and if a third game is needed, it will be played immediately after after two.
Gulf Coast is the first team int he state wo post 40 wins and the mark is only the third time in school history that a Lady Bulldogs softball team has won that many games.
Coach Long commented on the bat of Molly Murphy.
"I can't say enough about Molly right now, "said Long. "She's taking advantage of every opportunity to play and coming up big for us. She's worked hard in practice and has been very coachable."
