BILOXI, MS (Biloxi Shuckers) - Biloxi first baseman Nick Ramirez provided the big hit for the Shuckers in the bottom of the second inning Tuesday night. His base hit drove home Brett Phillips giving Biloxi a 4-3 lead, a lead they would not give up.
The win propels Biloxi atop the Southern League South Division with a 9-3 record. The BlueWahoos dropped to 9-4. The Shuckers have the best record in the Southern League.
Chris McFarland went 2 for 4 at the plate. He led off the bottom of the third with an infield single. Nathan Orf followed with a single through the right side of the infield.
With Shuckers on first and second, center fielder Brett Phillips slapped a single into left field, McFarland gave Biloxi the early lead.
Alex Blandino led off the top of the fourth inning with a double off the left field wall. He came home on a tapper to first baseman Ramirez. He threw to first for the second out in the inning, but on a throwing error to first, Blandino was able to tie the game for the BlueWahoos.
Victor Roache led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single. Roache had one of his better nights at the plate going 3 for 4. Chris McFarland stepped up to the plate with Shuckers on first and second, he hit a single into right field, Roache galloped home giving Biloxi a 2-1 advantage.
Javier Betancourt went 1 for 3 and had an RBI single.
After Pensacola tied the game, Ramirez came through with the RBI that was the difference in the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Javier Salas started the game for the Shuckers. He pitched 5.2 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 3 hits with 2 base on balls and 4 strikeouts.
Jed Bradley (1-0) would get the win for Biloxi.He pitched 1.1 innings. Pensacola got one hit off Bradley who tossed 2 strikeouts.
Hobbs Johnson pitched an inning and Jaye Chapman (5-0 S, 0.00 ERA) pitched an inning and picked up his fifth save on the season. He had one strikeout, giving Chapman strikeouts. Chapman has now retired all 18 batters he has faced with 8 strikeouts.
Sal Romano started the game on the mound for the BlueWahoos. He pitched 5.2 innings, gave up 9 hits, 3 runs, 2 base on balls and 5 strikeouts. Wandy Peralta suffered the loss for Pensacola. He pitched 1.1 innings, gave up the bit hit to Ramirez and a run.
The Shuckers scored 4 runs on 10 hits with 2 errors. The BlueWahoos scored 3 runs on 4 hits.
Biloxi and Pensacola conclude their five-game series with a 10:40 a.m. Wednesday at MGM Park. It will be Education Day with school kids in attendance.
