DMR reminds Coast residents importance of safety precautions this boating season

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - As the weather warms up, the Department of Marine Resources has a reminder for all boaters.

Assistant Marine Patrol Chief, Rusty Pittman, spoke at Tuesday's Commission on Marine Resources meeting. Pittman reminded boaters to be sure and check all their safety equipment at the start of this new boating season.

The checklist should include things like life jackets, flares and fire extinguishers. The marine patrol has already responded to several boating accidents this year, including a fatality.

Pittman said tragedy on the water can be prevented.

"This time of year with boating picking up we request and ask that everybody go through your vessel, check your equipment. Make sure you have a wearable life jacket on board for every person before you leave the harbor. And make sure everything is working on your boat," said Pittman.

Pittman also reminded everyone the DMR marine patrol offers boating safety classes on a regular basis.
