19th ranked Southern Miss battles Tulane on the baseball diamond in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WLOX) -

No. 19 Southern Miss will try to even their series with Tulane at one win apiece tonight at 6:30 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.

The Green Wave defeated the Golden Eagles 12-7 last month at MGM Park in Biloxi.

Southern Miss (27-10) dropped two of three games at UAB over the weekend.  On Sunday the Golden Eagles defeated the Blazers 11-0 in seven innings.  Senior Michael Gilbert belted a grand slam in the win and Chase Scott launched a three-run homer.

Southern Miss enters the Green Wave game with a team batting average of .319.

Graduate transfer and center fielder Jake Sandlin tops Southern Miss with a .386 average, senior shortstop Nick Dawson is batting .382 and senior first baseman Tim Lynch is at .381 with a team leading 42 runs batted in.

Tulane dropped two of three games over the weekend to Cincinnati and fell to 22-13 on the season.

Freshman left-hander Stevie Powers (0-0, 1.93 ERA) is expected to get the starting nod on the mound for the Golden Eagles.  The Green Wave are expected to send redshirt sophomore J.P. France (2-1, 4.67 ERA) against southern Miss.  He posted the win over the Golden Eagles in Biloxi.

Southern Miss returns home to Hattiesburg Friday night at 7 hosting Rice in a big Conference USA series.  Game two is set for 4 p.m. Saturday with the final game starting Sunday at 1 p.m.
