HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies has confirmed that a dead sea turtle was found on the beach near the RV lot at Silver Slipper Casino Saturday evening.

Officials say it appears the animal has been dead for a few days.

IMMS Director Moby Solangi issued the following statement, saying in part:

"Our team will respond in the morning. It appears to [sic] be one of the Kemps Ridley turtles we would have tagged and released. We had two other dead turtles we responded earlier today. These are endangered species."

The official also noted that finding deceased animals along the beach is common around this time of the year. A necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
