Southern Miss watched its C-USA consecutive win streak come to an end at 10 games Friday night on the road at UAB.
Jared Nixon hit for the cycle to lift the Blazers past the Golden Eagles 5-3 at Young Memorial Field.
Southern Miss (26-8, 11-2 C-USA) couldn't contain the UAB bats. The Blazers (13-21, 5-8 C-USA) banged out 16 hits. Six different UAB players collected two hits each.
The Golden Eagles plated three runs in the fourth inning. Tim Lynch opened the frame by bunting his way on. After a single to right by Tracy Hadley, Hunter Slater walked to load the bases. Michael Gilbert singled in a pair or runs before Storme Cooper finished the scoring on a sacrifice fly.
UAB tied the score with three runs in the fifth inning. Nixon had a solo homer, Carter Pharis added an RBI triple and Riley McCown belted a run-scoring single to tie the game.
Nixon then tripled home a run two innings later and UAB added an RBI single from Adam Smith in the seventh.
Walker Power, in relief of Cord Cockrell who gave u three runs on 11 hits with a strikeout over five innings, suffered the loss. He gave up two runs on four hits and three strikeouts over 1 2/3 innings to fall to 3-1.
UAB reliever Garrett Whitlock gave up two hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts over 1 2/3 innings to post the win, his third against three defeats.
Game two of the series is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
