Gabriel Guerrero had a big night at the plate for Mobile. The Arizona Diamondbacks' 11th ranked prospect launched two three-run home runs Wednesday propelling the BayBears past the Biloxi Shuckers 9-3 at MGM Park.
Biloxi starting pitcher Javier Salas (1-1) started the top of the fourth inning by retiring Jamie Westbrook thanks to a nice play by third baseman Nathan Orf who snagged a hard grounder, got back up and tossed a perfect throw to first base for the out.
Salas would walk the next two batters, setting the stage for Guerrero. He ripped the Salas pitch into left field, the ball bounced off the left field scoreboard for a three-run blast.
Salas worked 5-plus innings, gave up four runs on five hits, three walks and four strikeouts.
In the bottom of the fourth innings, the Shuckers plated one run. Biloxi center fielder Brett Phillips slammed a Yoan Lopez pitch down into the right field corner, placing Shuckers on 2nd and 3rd.
Catcher Jacob Nottingham hit a grounder to the BayBears shortstop, Phillips was tagged out at 3rd, but Orf galloped home with Biloxi's first run.
The Shuckers closed the gap 3-2 on a base hit through the left side of the infield off the bat of Javier Betancourt that drove home Tyrone Taylor who had singled.
Mobile extended its lead 4-2 on a sacrifice fly by Gabriel Noriega, bringing home Cron.
Mitch Haniger plated two more runs for the BayBears on a seventh inning single Guerrero would come up with his second 3-run home run and the lead became insurmountable.
Yoan Lopes (2-) posted the win. He allowed two runs over his six innings on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
The Shuckers and BayBears continue their series in Mobile 6:35 Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. RHP Adrian Houser (0-1, 10.50 ERA) will get the starting nod for the Shuckers, while RHP Matt Koch (0-1, 1.29 ERA) will take the mound for Mobile.
