GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Although one week has passed, mystery continues to surround a Gulfport shooting that left one dead and two others injured.
The April 6 triple shooting at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Louisiana Ave. took the life of 54-year-old Mitchell Weathersby. Neighbors are baffled by the incident.
"I don't have the slightest idea of what caused this. The slightest idea," said Walter Moore.
Weathersby's cousin, Theresa Fortenberry, remembers hearing the news that something was going on near her family and immediately calling Mitchell's mother.
"I asked her, 'Is everything good on your end,' said Fortenberry. "She said no it was something with Mitch."
Fortenberry made her way to the neighborhood, hoping for the best. But when she arrived, she learned Mitchell had been killed.
The news was the last thing family members wanted to hear; especially Mitchell's mother.
"It's very hard on her; it's very hard on her," said Fortenberry. "The last thing he would always say to family when they walked away was that he loved you."
With the case still unsolved, and so many questions unanswered, Mitchell's family can only speculate. They hope it all comes to a close soon.
"What happened, you know, why? I pray that there's justice behind this and that's what we're waiting on," said Fortenberry.
Weathersby's family is planning to hold a benefit cookout at noon on Friday to help with funeral expenses. It will be at the corner of MLK Jr. Blvd. and Hwy. 49.
