We dare say if you ask most people in Mississippi if protecting religious freedom is important, they would say, "yes." That seems to be the intended purpose of HB 1523, the Religious Accommodations Act.
While the act may be well intended, we believe it is completely unnecessary and draws negative attention to our state painting us as intolerant and biased.
If the Mississippi companies and business leaders opposed to HB 1523 are right, and that list is growing, this law will ultimately cost us needed jobs and revenue.
In the end, the measure is most likely unconstitutional.
Instead, legislators need to focus on core government responsibilities; like fixing roads and bridges and improving our education system.
Freedom of religion is important. It is a constitutionally protected right provided in the religion clauses of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. HB 1523 is unnecessary.
