HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - West Harrison head coach David Marsland has his Hurricanes sitting atop the Region 8-5A ranks with 5 wins and 1 defeat. Long Beach and Pascagoula are tied for second with 3 and 3 records, Gautier is 1 and 5. Marsland says his team has overcome a rash of injuries.
"The good thing about it we've had different layers step-up at several different positions, pitching and outfield, "stated Marsland. "Young guys coming in, pulling their weight and some of the young guys have actually taken the lead in this."
The West Harrison pitching staff has compiled a team ERA of 2.03. Dylan Cagle has rung-up 3 wins and 1 loss with a team leading 1.36 earned run average. The senior says this year's West Harrison team is determined to advance in the state playoffs.
Dylan Cagle said, "We've got good strong bats, pitching. Our defense is solid."
Colby Cagle said, "We put in all the work during practice and during the off-season. We worked so hard toward our success right now."
Junior Kasey Donaldson carries a 1.75 ERA and a team leading 46 strikeouts. He also leads the Hurricanes at the plate, batting .433 with 20 runs batted in.
"Last year we relied more on pitching, "said Donaldson. "This year we have come together more as a team, hitting the ball a lot better and playing better defense."
Junior pitcher Casey Simon is 5 and 1 on the mound and has a 1.87 ERA.
The Hurricanes have a .298 team batting average with freshman sensation Tate Parker batting .403 with 16 RBI, 7 doubles and 4 triples. He along with his brother, Brandon, a junior, have both hit 2 home runs. Brandon is swinging the bat at a .385 clip with 6 doubles.
With a forecast of rain West Harrison and Gautier decided to move up their Tuesday region game to Monday and the Hurricanes defeated the Gators 9-5 for their 19th win and improved to 6 and 1 in the Region 8-5A standings.
