GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Austin Delano and his mother April Frank are having a hard time grieving the death of 27-year-old Dennis Bunch. The two were with him only moments before he was shot and killed this past Saturday at an apartment complex on 31st Street.
"I told him I loved him, and he walked out the door, I went and jumped in the shower and the next thing I know someone was knocking on the door and everything had been taped off," said Frank.
The murder of Bunch marks the 10th shooting in Gulfport since the beginning of 2016. averaging about one shooting every 10 days. But Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes says that doesn't tell the whole story.
"Actually our crime statistics in Gulfport are down from this time last year," said Hewes.
Mayor Hewes says he's been working hand in hand with the community as well as the Gulfport police department to make sure residents are safe.
"We have a very good police force. They're highly trained possibly the best in the state in my opinion, and we actually hired 2 new officers just recently," said Hewes.
"This is a time that we need to be banning together and protecting one another from such incidents," said Frank.
