BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The Biloxi Shuckers were out hit 7 to 5 and overcame two errors to beat Chattanooga 3-1 before 1,560 fans at MGM Park. The win gives the Shuckers 4 wins on the season against one loss.
Garrett Cooper had a big night at the plate for the Shuckers. The designated hitter came through with 2 hits in 3 at-bats and provided the game winner, a triple in the bottom of the 7th that scored two runs.
In the top of the 3rd inning Chattanooga had a scoring threat wiped-out. With two outs, Mitch Garver ripped a single down the left field line. Shuckers left fielder Kyle Wren made a perfect throw to third baseman Nate Orf, who tagged out Daniel Palka who raced from first all the way down to third base.
Cooper led off the bottom of the 3rd inning with a single into center field. After Nick Shaw walked, Javier Betancourt laid down a perfect bunt, moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd base.
Kyle Wren followed with a sacrifice fly ball into right field, Cooper scored from third giving the Shuckers a 1-0 advantage.
Top of the fifth inning, Chattanooga tied the game on a single off the bat of Leonardo Reginatto that landed into left field, Biloxi left fielder Wren couldn't handle the ball and Engeib Vielma was able to take advantage of the error and tied the game for the Lookouts.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cooper came through with the game winning triple to give the Shuckers 4 wins in 5 games against the defending Southern League champions.
Jorge Ortega started the game for the Shuckers. He pitched 6 innings, gave up 6 hits and 1 earned run with 5 strikeouts.
Daniel Tillman relieved Ortega on the mound in the 7th and 8th and gave up only 1 hit with 1 strikeout and he posted his first win of the season.
Jaye Chapman pitched the 9th inning, gave up no hits with 2 strikeouts to post his 2nd save on the season.
Ryan Eades pitched 6 innings for the Lookouts and gave up 3 hits with 1 run and 3 strikeouts.
Jake Reed pitched the final two innings for Chattanooga. The Shuckers got 2 hits and 2 runs off Reed who suffered the loss.
The Shuckers (4-1) entertain Mobile Tuesday and Wednesday night at 6:40 at MGM Park, weather-permitting.
