Volunteer helps HSSM win $10,000

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Humane Society of South Mississippi will be receiving $10,000 and it's all thanks to a volunteer. Wendy Kennedy is one of the five winners in the Hill's Shelter Heroes online voting contest.

In the nomination letter of Wendy, HSSM wrote Wendy goes far above and beyond what is expected of a volunteer.

"Her compassion, matched only by her own drive and commitment to the animals of South Mississippi, Wendy wakes each morning more committed and more determined than the previous day," wrote HSSM.

Wendy started volunteering at HSSM four years ago as a pet photographer in order to help shelter cats and dogs get adopted through better exposure on online and on social media. The nomination letter goes on to say Wendy then started working on ways to improve the shelter.

"Wendy made it her goal to create and fund programs throughout the shelter. She has directly impacted the lives of thousands of homeless shelter pets through her own life saving programs. Whether it is through her innovative enrichment program, the Hogs Heaven fund, or her life saving heart worm treatment program, Roxy's Fund, she has become a shining example of the change a single volunteer can make in the community when compassion, initiative, and commitment come together."
