Original Mississippi Constitution to be exhibited Tuesday

JACKSON, MS (AP) - Mississippi's original 1817 Constitution will be displayed Tuesday at the state Supreme Court building.

The exhibit of the hand-written document that established Mississippi's government at statehood is a prelude to the state's bicentennial in 2017. The Mississippi Department of Archives and History will make it available for public viewing at the state law library during National Library Week.

The 1817 Constitution and 20-star American flag that marked Mississippi's addition to the Union will be shown in 10 communities around the state starting in October.

Archives spokesman Chris Goodwin says the fragile document is rarely removed from climate-controlled storage. A digital copy (http://bit.ly/1So9aOA) is available online.

The 8,957-word document was signed by 45 delegates on Aug. 15, 1817. One delegate objected, one was absent due to illness and one had died.
