GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

As people across Mississippi are speaking out about House Bill 1523, Gulfport Mayor Hewes recently joined the conversation.

"Gulfport is the same today, as it was yesterday. The character of our community is the result of the diversity of our culture, economy, natural resources, and people," Hewes told WLOX. "We invite everybody to discover the city that is open for business and geared for a good time."

Signed by Gov. Phil Bryant, the HB1523 allows private businesses refuse service to those in the LGBT community because of religious background and beliefs.

Both residents and businesses have come out against the law.
