GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Just about anyone can love animals, but it takes a special person to go above and beyond. At the Humane Society of South Mississippi, those special people are called volunteers.
A very special volunteer, Wendy Kennedy, is up for a big honor - Hill's Shelter Heros.
One of 10 finalists, Kennedy began her altruism with the shelter four years ago as a pet photographer.
"Often volunteers can be discouraged by the financial constraints of a nonprofit organization, but she refused to allow a lack of funding to discourage her. Rather than accepting her situation, Wendy made it her goal to create and fund programs throughout the shelter. She has directly impacted the lives of thousands of homeless shelter pets through her own life saving programs," said HSSM in a statement on their website. "Whether it is through her innovative enrichment program, the Hogs Heaven fund, or her life saving heart worm treatment program, Roxy's Fund, she has become a shining example of the change a single volunteer can make in the community when compassion, initiative, and commitment come together."
The public can vote once daily until Sunday, April 10 by clicking here.
