JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A federal jury decided Thursday there was no malicious prosecution by former Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd in the 2011 arrest of then Ocean Springs Alderman James Hagan.

Hagan filed a federal lawsuit alleging malicious prosecution after embezzlement and other charges against him were dropped when a grand jury found there was not enough evidence to prosecute.

Hagan sought unspecified damages for false arrest, incarceration and damage to his reputation and future earnings. The case went to trial Monday.

After the verdict, Byrd's attorney, John Banahan, said the jury did a good job in the case, and Byrd is grateful for the verdict.
