Ole Miss, coming off a series loss to Mississippi State, scored in each of the first four innings to knock off Southern Miss 6-2 Tuesday night at Trustmark Park. The No. 14 Rebels (22-7) ended a six-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles (22-8).
Ole Miss scored the games first run in the bottom of the first on a single b y Tate Blackman. The Rebels added two runs in the bottom of the second on a single off the bat of Ryan Olenyk. Ole Miss plated two more runs in the bottom of the third when Connor Cloyd singled up the middle and the Rebels were coasting with a 5-0 advantage.
Mason Walley got the starting assignment for Southern Miss and fell to 1-2 having allowed five runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Ole Miss freshman James MacArthur (4-0) gave up only two hits over the first four innings and would toss six solid innings. He allowed no runs on four hits, two walks and five strikeouts.
Golden Eagle relievers would retire 13 consecutive Rebels giving Southern Miss a chance to rally.
Chase Scott reached on an error to lead off the top of the seventh inning for Southern Miss. Storme Cooper smacked a single into left-center that scored Scott with the Golden Eagles first run.
In the eighth inning Dylan Burdeaux led off with a double. Jake Sandlin singled and Tim Lynch belted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Burdeaux.
Southern Miss entertains Middle Tennessee in a three-game Conference USA series this weekend. Ole Miss battles Arkansas in a three-game SEC series.
