GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - 30 animals are now resting in a temporary place after being rescued from a home on Tuesday.
"We suspect this is a large scale backyard breeder situation. The animals are were found in pretty deplorable conditions," said Humane Society employee Maren Slay.
A neighbor who wishes not to be named says she noticed the smell years ago and made several calls, but nothing was done until now. "The smell coming out of the house was scary. I don't know how anyone could have lived there. There were too many animals."
However, a neighbor who lives two doors down from the residence said he knew what was going on, and he said no one ever had a problem with it. "This has been going on for 20 years and nobody has complained about it. Some at a distance but not any of us locally," said Richard McCoy.
McCoy said the homeowner was only taking care of dogs that he rescued, mainly focusing on their health rather than his own.
"He even drove to Slidell Sunday, giving away two of the dogs, and he's been trying to find a good home for the animals, and then they wanna do this too him. This is nothing but publicity for them and they got what they wanted," said McCoy.
59-year-old James Wright was arrested and charged with more than 30 counts of charges regarding living conditions and health of the animals.
