BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - If you have plans that involve driving along the beach in Biloxi this weekend, don't expect to get there in a hurry. Police are preparing for huge traffic jams thanks to lots of events going on.
Thousands are expected around the Coast Coliseum from Friday to Sunday for Biloxi Black Beach Weekend. Maj. Jim Adamo with Biloxi Police is getting ready for all the traffic.
"It's not going to be uncommon this weekend to have such heavy congestion on Hwy. 90 that it will probably take you an hour and a half to get from Debuys to Rodenberg," said Adamo.
Also there's more going on than just spring break activities. The Biloxi Shuckers have their first home series of the year with games Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Gulfport Harbor is the site of the Gulfcoast Yacht and Boat Show.
At the White House Hotel, hundreds are expected to attend a wedding on the front lawn Saturday. Ashlei Marie with the hotel is doing her best to make sure the traffic doesn't mess up plans for her guests.
"We are at max capacity at the hotel, we're sold out," said Marie. "So we're just going to try to keep it normal as possible on property, but we do know there's a lot going on, on each side of us at the coliseum and the Shuckers baseball field."
Adamo is working with agencies across the Coast to keep traffic flowing as smooth as possible.
"I've spoken with folks from Gulfport, D'Iberville and Ocean Springs so we brought everybody together with a plan and we're ready," said Adamo. "Everybody is really good about helping each other out, so I'm confident that's we've done the best we could as far as planning."
He does offer some advice for people not planning on going to the events.
"If you have to get around town do your best to avoid Hwy. 90," said Adamo.
Adamo added if traffic does get extremely heavy, turn around points on Hwy. 90 will be limited.
