He's 21 years-old and despite playing in only 23 games with the Shuckers in 2015, Brett Phillips has become a fan favorite. Like most minor league players, Phillips wants to eventually crack the Major Leagues. In the meantime, he's happy to continue his baseball journey here in Biloxi.
"One of the many things I was looking forward to in coming back was the fans, "said Phillips. "You know the fans are awesome. I was here a short amount of time last year and just a great atmosphere."
Awesome is a good word in describing the play of Phillips. Look at this catch he made in center field last season....awesome.
In 2012...the young man was drafted out of high school in Seminole, Florida in the 6th round by the Astros. Last season in a trade between the Astros and Brewers, Phillips, along with pitchers Josh Hader and Adrian Houser, made their way to Biloxi. A trade that benefited the Shuckers.
Phillips said, "Defense and my speed, that's what got me drafted in the first place out of high school. You know each day and everyday I try to improve on every point of my game."
Since 2012 Phillips carries a .295 batting average with 16 home runs. He says he gives a hundred-percent each and every day.
"There are five tools in baseball, power, speed, fielding, arm strength and hitting for average. The moment you get complacent, someone is going to pass you up."
Phillips has an unusual laugh. In fact it has gone viral. Google his name and you can listen to the laugh!
