GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The 28th annual Barbecue Under the Oaks cranked out the flavor Saturday at the Gulfport Centennial Plaza.
Around 2,000 people gathered under the towering trees to taste the smoky, fall-off-the-bone barbecue that 30 rib-masters spent all day cooking.
The event is held each year as a fundraiser for the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra, however, this is only the second year that the family-friendly festival has been held at Centennial Plaza.
Aside from great tasting fare, there was also many fun activities for kids, who enjoyed carnival rides and miniature horses.
Event organizer Melanie Clark says the potential for the event keeps getting bigger each year.
"It's not hard to grow an event like this because people are enthusiastic," said Clark. "It's a melting pot of everyone on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Everybody from the state of Mississippi north of us, they want to come down. This is something you want to be a part of."
Clark said she already has people ready to sign up for next year's event.
The Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra has a commitment from the city of Gulfport to have the event at Centennial Plaza for the next eight years.
