PICAYUNE, MS (WLOX) -

Picayune's Police Department is beefing up its patrol.

The police department recently purchased nine new Dodge Chargers to replace multiple, aging Crown Victoria's on the fleet. According to Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri, it is the largest number of new vehicles ever purchased by the department at one time.

The purchases were made possible by an excess in money from last year's budget, as well as a three year lease program. Magri says the additions make a big difference in several areas, including the safety of citizens, and the morale of the officers.

"Pride for the department in the community. You know, you get people coming in from other states that come in and visit our city and they see 2016 brand-new patrol cars that look nice, you know it, makes the city look good something to be proud of," said Magri.

Officials say some of the old patrol cars were more than a decade old.
