PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

A drug deal gone bad. That's what Pascagoula Police believe led to a fatal stabbing at an apartment complex Tuesday.

Around 11:30am, officers were called to investigate a disturbance at Tall Pine Apartments on Hospital Road. But officers couldn't find the conflict, and the caller who reported the problem wouldn't answer the phone. After talking to a few people in the parking lot, who said nothing happened, the officers left.

About 30 minutes later, two stabbing victims showed up at the emergency room of Singing River Hospital. Officers soon realized the two men were stabbed at the apartment complex they just left.

When the officers returned to the scene of the crime, they found witnesses who described how three men kicked in their apartment door and demanded money. One of the residents grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed two of the three men. All three then ran away.

Investigators believe the fight actually started earlier that morning over a drug deal. One of the apartment residents was accused of stealing money from one of the men who kicked the door down.

Joel Marvin Thornton, 41, died from his stab wound. So far no one has been charged in his death, and no one is in custody.

Police say this case will be presented to a Jackson County Grand Jury for any possible charges.
