JACKSON, MS (WLOX) - If you've ever wanted to play the lottery in Mississippi, it could soon be your lucky day.
Tuesday, the Mississippi House of Representatives voted in favor of a measure that would create a state lottery. It was an amendment added to Senate Bill 2541, which would also legalize fantasy sports betting in the state. According to the amendment, proceeds would benefit public education, as well as county road and bridge maintenance
The legislation still has to be approved by the state Senate, where similar bills have failed in the past. However, the original bill was penned by Senator Sean Tindell.
Mississippi voters chose to legalize the possibility of a state lottery in 1992, but many lawmakers oppose the games of chance because of religious reasons.
