BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The Townsend family drove three hours from Carthage, Miss. to spend Easter in Biloxi. One of their first stops on Friday was Big Play Family Fun Center off Veterans Ave. and Hwy. 90.

"My kids enjoy coming and they just wanted to get away for spring break," said Michael Townsend.

Soon, families will be able to enjoy more than just arcade games, go carts, bumper cars and miniature golf. The tourist attraction is undergoing a $3 million, 26,000 square-foot expansion; the first major renovation since opening in May of 2010.

"It's kind of a new trend across the country. So if you go to Atlanta, Houston or Boston, they've got these mega-entertainment centers," said Big Play co-owner Brandon Wooldridge.

The anchor attraction will be a 12-lane bowling alley.

"More so than having glow bowling, we're going to have pretty much nightclub lights. So it'll feel more like an ultra lounge with loud music," said Wooldridge. "The arcade's going to be really great, too. We got all brand new state-of-the-art pieces coming in. It's going to be the largest, the best."

There will also be a full-service restaurant and bar, a pizzeria and a special events center that offers 2,000 square-foot of space for company meetings, family reunions and birthday parties. The expansion is designed to be kid-friendly, but also appeal to adults.

"That's awesome. This area definitely needs it. My grandparents used to bring me here every summer when I was younger," said Tezra Ricketts of Houma, La. "I have so many memories of coming here and doing things with them, and it's nice to bring my kids now and let them enjoy all that."

The project started in early February and the entertainment center is slated to open in late June. The owners plan to hire 40 full-time employees and 20 seasonal workers.

"If more things are added, it'll make it a lot more fun. But, it's still a good place to enjoy," said Townsend.

The inflatable slides will move to the south side of the highway, near the southeast corner of Veterans and Highway 90. the slides will be available during the summer, and other special events.
