GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

An elementary school teacher's hair is a lot shorter than when she got to school Thursday morning. Mandy Moran let some of her students at St. James Catholic Elementary School cut her hair for a good cause.

Moran held a reading contest to select six students for the job. The students had to read more than 30 books.

She decided to donate her hair to the Pink Heart Funds, a non-profit dedicated to helping women and children in Mississippi who are battling cancer and other conditions that cause hair loss.

Moran hopes this will teach her students a valuable lesson.

“I'm honored that I could do it. That I could give back something from myself. A lot of people think that it's just about giving monetary donations and things like that, but I want my students to understand that you can give back other things,” said Moran, teacher.

Moran's hair will be used to help make a wig for a cancer patient in need.
