NEW ORLEANS, LA (WLOX) -

Nearly six years after the BP oil spill changed the Gulf Coast forever, Hollywood will get its turn at telling the story. Lionsgate released the trailer for the new film Wednesday. It's set for release in September.

The film stars Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson, John Malkovich and Dylan O'Brien. Wahlberg plays Mike Williams, the Deepwater Horizon's chief electronics technician who was trapped below deck as the rig exploded.

The screenplay is based on a New York Times article, "Deepwater Horizon's Final Hours."

Ricky Strauss, President of Participant Media, called the movie, "A suspenseful and inspiring real-life account of everyday people whose values are tested in the face of an impending environmental disaster."

Principal photography for the film began last April in New Orleans. It's set to hit theaters September 30, 2016.
