OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - The renovated boat launch at the Ocean Springs Small Craft Harbor is now open. Construction work is still underway in the area, so everyone is urged to use caution when walking or riding in the area.
To increase safety and ease congestion, the project separated the boat trailer launch area from the through traffic and added a sidewalk. Motorist should use the two lane road between the sidewalk and the median, while the boat launch traffic should use the lane on the other side of the median. While the launch area should not be used by through traffic, no parking is allowed and through access should never be blocked by unattended vehicles.
The $1.2 million Harbor Road project, designed by Machado/Patano, PLC, included improvements to the boat launch and piers, as well the creation of a separate roadway and sidewalk with improved lighting. The project is a joint effort by the City of Ocean Springs, the Jackson County Board of Supervisors, and the Harbor Commission. Funding includes a Tidelands Grant awarded to the City from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) and local funds and labor from Jackson County.
"These important improvements to the Harbor will hopefully be enjoyed and appreciated by our boaters," said Mayor Connie Moran. "We are grateful to Jackson County, MDMR and other partners who have made this possible!"
The paving you see now is not the final layer and the striping is temporary. There is a second project at the Harbor Master Office that will be completed within the next couple of months that will include paving of Harbor Road to the north. Therefore, the final asphalt layer will be applied all at once, along with the final striping.
The road and boat launch will be temporary closed during weekdays only while the asphalt is applied and again when the striping is applied.
