No. 2 Gulf Coast and No. 5 Jones County split a double-header in JUCO softball


No. 5 Jones beat No. 2 Gulf Coast 7-1 in game one Tuesday.  The Lady Bulldogs rallied to secure a 4-0 victory in game two.

Kaitlin Lee tossed another shutout for Gulf Coast, holding the high-powered Lady Bobcats to six hits.  Lexie Mathis provided all the pop the Lady Bulldogs would need with a three-run homer, her 12th of the season.

Lee said, "It shows that we have heart and guts and we're here to fight no matter who it is.  It showed them that no matter how bad they beat us in the first game, we're going to come back, have a positive attitude and shut'em 

Lee (12-1) struck out five batters, gave up six hits with no walks.

Gulf Coast is now 25-3, 9-3 in MACJC play.  Jones is 25-4, 13-1 in league play.

In game one, Jones scored twice in the third, breaking a 39-inning Lady Bulldogs shutout streak.  The Lady Bobcats added four in the fifth. Nora Keehn suffered her first loss of the season in the opener, falling to 7-1.  She gave up two runs on five hits in three innings of work.

Gulf Coast return home to Ross-Smith Field in Perkinston on Friday, a date with Meridian.  The doubleheader is slated to start at 2 p.m.
