HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Right now in Gulfport, a dog is home recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. His owners are calling him a hero. The say their pup can be credited with helping to thwart Monday's home invasion on Pine Forest Road.

For many people, dogs are a part of the family. In this case, Leon's owners are saying that he saved their family. But, he paid a price for his actions.

"I just wanted people to see what they did to my dog," said Leon's owner.

According to Leon's owner, the harrowing events of Monday's home invasion caught him and his wife by surprise.

"She woke me up basically screaming, get the gun, get the gun, and they took off," said the owner.

Before his wife could grab a gun, Leon's owner says he was already protecting them. According to his master, Leon bolted after several figures in masks who were breaking into the home. The crime report indicates that the suspects fired back at Leon while running away.

Leon was shot in the head, but that didn't stop him, according to his owner.

"Even after he was wounded, he was after them," said his owner.

According to Leon's owner, he was rushed to the emergency vet in D'Iberville for treatment. He said the path of the bullet made all the difference.

"It's a wonder he isn't dead, but if it had been over just a little bit, I'm sure he would have been," said Leon's owner.

Leon's owner believes it's a matter of luck that Leon is alive and recovering today. The suspects in this case face multiple charges including charges of animal cruelty.
