HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Fred Couples has withdrawn from the 2016 Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. Couples, who won the event in 2012, was forced to pull out because of back issues.

"We are going to miss Fred Couples playing in the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic this year," said tournament director Steve Nieman. "Freddie is a tremendous player and a proud champion on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He has expressed his disappointment in not being able to compete in our tournament, which is one of his favorites on the PGA TOUR Champions schedule. We look forward to hosting him next year."

The 2016 Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic still boasts a strong field of contenders. 2015 champion David Frost will defend his title against some of the best players in the world, including former champions Jeff Maggert and Michael Allen, and World Golf Hall of Fame members Tom Kite, Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie and Larry Nelson. The field, which features 26 of the Top 30 on the current Charles Schwab Cup Money List.

The Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic Presented by C Spire will take place March 31 - April 3 at Fallen Oak in Biloxi. Tickets are $15 and on sale now. They can be purchased online at www.2016MGRC.com or by calling the tournament office at (228) 896-6365. Children 16 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult.
