New Golden Eagles football coach Jay Hopson is ready to get spring football underway. Practice begins at 3:00 p.m. and is expected to last until 6:00 p.m. at the Joe P. Park Practice Field on the campus of Southern Miss.
"We are looking forward to tomorrow, "head coach Jay Hopson said. "The first day is always a fun day. Spring is a great time. You get to teach. We are all teachers and educators at the end of the day. That is something that I think all coaches loves. In the spring, things are slowed down a little bit which is a good thing."
Spring practice will be held each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon with scrimmages slated for Saturday morning beginning April 2.
Hopson begins his first season after rebuilding the Alcorn State football program into one of the elite teams in the SWAC. He expects to pickup from where Todd Monken left off. Monken guided the Golden Eagles to a 9-win
season and bowl game.
Don't look for Southern Miss to change the offense with quarterback Nick Mullins returning for his senior season. He passed for over 4,000 yards with 38 touchdowns in 2015.
"We want to see the guys play hard, "stated Hopson. "It is a great time for competition and for guys to show what they can do and win jobs. That is what springs is all about, winning jobs and creating competition."
The Annual Black and Gold Scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, April 23 at high noon.
